PASCAL Private Secondary School Lefkosia promotes Sustainability Through New reBLUE Box at Ayia Thekla Beach

On the 15^th of  June 2026 we donated a new reBLUE Box to Ayia Thekla Beach. The students and staff members were warmly welcomed by the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannettou, the Deputy Mayor of Sotira, Mr. Antonis Koumis, Mr. Tasos Pateras, Head of Warehouses and Beach Beds/Umbrellas for the Municipality of Ayia Napa, and Mr. Charalambos Antoniou, Project Manager at CYMEPA.

The municipal representatives sincerely thanked the students and their teachers for their outstanding and highly beneficial initiative, recognizing its contribution to reducing waste, promoting the reuse of beach toys, and raising environmental awareness within the community.

During the event, the Municipality of Sotira announced a generous donation of €1,000 to support the continuation of the reBLUE Project and the construction of additional reBLUE Boxes, enabling the project to expand to more beaches and further promote sustainable practices.

The Mayor further praised the school for its original and innovative ideas regarding the reuse of plastic toys, emphasizing that such actions make a significant contribution to promoting the principles of the circular economy. He also highlighted that these efforts strengthen the Municipality’s environmental policy and contribute to the protection of the local ecosystem and the area’s natural heritage.

On behalf of our school Head Teacher, Mr. Marios Hadjivasiliou and Ms. Cristina Jimenez and Ms Irene Frangou, the school’s Environmental Policy Representatives and Project Coordinators, expressed their sincere gratitude to the Municipality of Ayia Napa and the Municipality of Sotira for their continuous support and collaboration over the past four years. They emphasized the importance of raising students’ awareness of environmental responsibility and noted that initiatives such as the reBLUE Box provide children with the opportunity to actively contribute to environmental protection while fostering their ecological consciousness.

Our pupils also visited Ammos tou Kampouri Beach, where they monitored and surveyed the existing reBLUE Box as part of the project's ongoing evaluation. They worked enthusiastically to remove microplastics from both the beach and the shallow coastal waters, contributing directly to the protection of the marine environment and gaining valuable hands-on experience in environmental stewardship.

The reBLUE Box is part of the reBLUE Project, which aims to reduce plastic waste on Cyprus’ beaches by encouraging the collection and reuse of beach toys that might otherwise be discarded. Through this initiative, children can share and reuse toys following the simple principle: “Borrow, Play, Return.” In this way, the project helps keep beaches cleaner while promoting sustainable practices, responsible consumption, and the values of the circular economy.
