PASCAL Private Primary School, Lemesos – 28 January: Year 3 Launches “Komposto” – Learning to Care for the Earth From the Ground Up with Our New Composting Initiative

On 28 January, our school proudly launched Komposto, an exciting new environmental initiative led by our enthusiastic Year 3 students. This hands‑on project marks an important step in strengthening our commitment to sustainability while offering pupils meaningful, real‑world learning experiences about caring for the planet.

As part of the Komposto programme, Year 3 students have begun collecting a range of compostable materials during the school day, including:

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps from lunch
  • Coffee grounds kindly provided by the canteen
  • Fallen leaves gathered from around the school grounds

All collected materials are added to our brand‑new school compost bin, where they will naturally break down into nutrient‑rich compost. Once ready, this compost will be used to enrich our school garden and green spaces—allowing students to witness the complete cycle of waste reduction, regeneration, and sustainability in action.

Beyond collecting materials, the children will also take responsibility for monitoring and maintaining the compost bin. They will observe changes, record progress, and learn more about the science of decomposition and environmental stewardship as the project continues to grow.

We are incredibly proud of our young eco‑leaders for embracing Komposto with such enthusiasm, curiosity, and responsibility. Their efforts represent a wonderful beginning to our school’s expanding sustainability journey.

“It was fun collecting fruit and vegetable scraps and putting them into the compost. It’s so good that we are doing this at school.”
– Dean, 3A

Well done, Year 3! Let’s keep the momentum going as we work together towards a greener, more sustainable future.
