On 18 November 2025, our project Seas of Change – Sustainability from Sea Grass and Sea Shells was officially approved, and our school proudly became a European Blue School. This award recognises our commitment to ocean literacy, sustainability, and student-led environmental action.

Our project supports key UN Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 14, SDG 13, SDG 12, and SDG 15.

Phase 1: Learning from the Sea

With the support of the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute, students took part in interactive sessions on:

  • The importance of Posidonia oceanica
  • Coastal ecosystems and beach protection
  • Seagrass species in Cyprus

These workshops helped students understand how healthy oceans support climate stability, biodiversity, and human life.

Taking Action: Beach Clean-Up

Our Year 5 Eco-Committee organised clean-ups at Kourion Beach and Lady’s Mile Beach, collecting bags of litter to protect marine life and keep our coastlines clean.
The event was sponsored by OUSAI Properties Ltd.

Students collected washed-up Posidonia for science experiments and used it to create compost for growing vegetables in our school garden.

Phase 2: Innovation in the Laboratory

Year 4 students, guided by our secondary chemistry teacher and Eco‑Ambassador Alisa, explored sustainable cement made from mussel shells. They learned about CO₂ emissions from traditional cement production and how innovation can support climate action.

Student reflections:

  • “We discovered something new and reused mussels instead of throwing them.” — Marina, 4C
  • “I liked making sustainable cement and learning about global warming. Ms Niki looked like a real scientist!” — Danilo, 4C
  • “I enjoyed crushing the mussels and presenting to Year 4!” — Alisa, 5B

Looking Ahead

Becoming a European Blue School marks the start of an ongoing journey. Our students are learning that sustainability is not just a topic — it is a responsibility. Through hands‑on science and environmental action, they are becoming young guardians of the ocean.

We are proud to contribute to the global Sustainable Development Goals and inspire the next generation to protect our planet.
