As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental education, PASCAL Private Secondary School Lemesos proudly continues its active participation in the international Eco-Schools programme. Under this year’s theme, “Life on Land” (UN Sustainable Development Goal 15), our pupils engaged in a dynamic range of activities that fostered awareness, responsibility, and action for the protection of natural ecosystems.
Among the key achievements of the year was a remarkable 3rd place in the WWF Wild Wisdom Global Challenge, an international competition promoting environmental knowledge and advocacy. This success highlights not only our pupils’ understanding of biodiversity but also their passion for making a difference.
Hands-on, community-driven initiatives played a central role throughout the year. Pupils led and participated in environmental clean-ups as part of Let’s Do It Cyprus, while also championing creative reuse and waste reduction through the organisation of a Christmas Toy Drive and Clothing Bazaar. These projects emphasised the importance of reducing consumption and giving new life to old items.
Our commitment to environmental education extended into the classroom and beyond. During STEAM Day, pupils explored the interconnectedness of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics with ecological concepts. Through the NZ4Y initiative, they deepened their understanding of climate change and sustainability. Meanwhile, participation in the Young Reporters for the Environment programme empowered them to investigate and report on local environmental issues with a critical eye and a strong voice.
A highlight of the year was the educational field trip to Kritou Terra, where pupils had the opportunity to explore local ecosystems up close and apply their knowledge in a real-world context. From observing flora and fauna to participating in hands-on conservation activities, the experience was both educational and inspiring.
Reflecting on the year, Eco-Schools Coordinator Eleni Odysseos shared:
“It has been a privilege and a deeply rewarding experience to guide our pupils through this journey. Their enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment to environmental responsibility have been truly inspiring. I have witnessed firsthand how environmental education empowers young people—not only with knowledge, but with a sense of purpose and responsibility.”
At PASCAL Private Secondary School Lemesos, we believe that education must go hand in hand with action. As we continue to grow as an Eco-School, we remain dedicated to cultivating a school culture rooted in sustainability, respect for nature, and active global citizenship.
